April at ignite capoeira

Technique & Movement Focus

We will be practicing plyometric training to help with our quick take off muscles for ginga and kicking, and recommend students bring a jump rope or long thick cord (your capoeira belt will work!) to classes this month (it will be placed on the floor- not swung to jump rope).

We will also be practicing parafuso, meia lua de compasso, and marking a banda (sweep).

Fita Focus

Our Fita Focus this month is PASSION (red fita or other similarly colored fita or ribbon).

See our Fita Section for some reflection questions, journal prompts, and worksheet.  We will be discussing this topic throughout the month in class.

Music Focus

We will be practicing some new corridos (short call and response songs), including, "Paranaue" and "Pomba Voou", while we continue to learn to play pandeiro or drum along with our singing.

In Berimbau class we will be practicing the benguela rhythm and the medio rhythm.

A few instrument suggestions:

  1. Pandeiro- a perfect starter instrument. There are many options and sizes on Amazon
  2. Djembe drum- while not used in capoeira, it's shape is like a small version of the atabque drum
  3. Berimbau- we recommend purchasing from berimbaushop.com (no affiliation).  We can help you pick out the right type for you!

See our music section for song lyrics and more.
