We offer classes in Capoeira Regional, which is one of the two main types of capoeira. Our lineage traces its roots back to Mestre Bimba, the creator of Capoeira Regional. Our About section includes more information about capoeira's history, as well as our lineage.
We can't wait to welcome you into our capoeira family! Please use the Contact Form to set up a free trial class, or email us at info@ignitecapoeira.com.

Absolutely! We encourage all interested students to take advantage of our free private trial class and a free week of classes before signing up for a session. You can sign up for the free trial offer here, and we will get in touch right away to schedule your initial private class.
Please login using the "Class Login" link at the top of the website.
In our private trial class, instructor, students, and parents will have a chance to meet each other and ask questions. Then, we will check our audio and video set-ups to ensure that we can see and hear each other well, and make sure that the student has a small, open space to practice in.
Next, we will go through a full length capoeira class that mirrors our regular classes. Classes will include a warm-up, we will learning a capoeira kick and some basic capoeira movements, and for kids, we will play a game.
Students do not need any prior martial arts knowledge or experience, and should wear comfortable clothing and be barefoot.
Please see our Pricing Page for detailed information on pricing. Our programs are billed monthly; there is no need for a long-term program committment.

Yes! We have seen first hand how children and adults alike have thrived through making safe connections and learning in a virtual format. Ignite Capoeira was formed from the belief that learning, fun, and connections should be available to everyone; a virtual format makes this possible for many who are not able to take part in in-person experiences due to health history, Covid-caution level, or location. Something so unique to capoeira is the concept of "axé" (ah-SHAY). Axé is the vibration of life-force, positive energy, or spirit that exists within ourselves and between each-other. It's the igniting of that inner spark, of feeling your passion for something, of feeling aligned... of seeing the best in yourself and allowing yourself to see the best in others. This is something we and our children need and deserve in our changing world, and our vision for Ignite Capoeira is to bring this to those who need a virtual format to access it.
Just like learning anything new, it takes practice. Students will feel successful and proud of themselves throughout each class, as we use a consistent class format, balance practice of known techniques with introduction of new techniques, and do it all in a fun and encouraging environment. This helps students build self-esteem, which helps them to feel confident in their self-expression.
There is a belt system in capoeira. In capoeira, we call our belts "cords". Cords are earned at an event called a "batizado" (bah-tchee-zah-doh). This word translates to "baptism" but there is no religious connotation or history behind it. Rather, a capoeira batizado is a special event where new students who have been training in the group are honored and officially brought into the group- they play capoeira with an instructor and their peers (at Ignite Capoeira, we are able to do this all virtually!), and are given a special capoeira nickname. Belt or cord advancements also occur at this time.
In many traditional capoeira schools, cord advancements may not occur for a year for beginners, and much longer for intermediate and advanced students. An individual who is promoted to "Mestre" has often been focused on training for many decades in capoeira.
Cord levels are not integral to our capoeira training at Ignite Capoeira, but we also recognize that it can be motivating and fun for students to work towards a goal like a new cord color. Due to our virtual nature of classes, we will be holding batizado and promotion events three times per year. Please see our Cords and Fitas page for more information.
The history of capoeira nicknaems, or apelidos, is deeply intertwined with the historical context of capoeira itself. During the time of slavery in Brazil, capoeira was practiced by enslaved Africans who needed to conceal their true identities and intentions from the oppressive authorities. Apelidos were used as aliases or pseudonyms to protect the practitioners and maintain anonymity. These nicknames often referred to animals, nature, or aspects of their physical appearance, allowing capoeiristas to identify one another while preserving their safety and secrecy. Over time, apelidos became an integral part of capoeira culture, serving as a means of recognition, identity, and camaraderie among practitioners. Today, apelidos continue to be used in the capoeira community, carrying on this historical tradition.
You don't need to wear any special capoeira clothing to train! Pick whatever is most comfortable- usually students wear shorts or loose fitting pants, and a t-shirt.
Students have the option of ordering specific capoeira pants online, but we do not supply them. There are colorful "street pants", or the traditional white pant which typically has loops around the waist for a cord. We will be offering Ignite Capoeira patches and t-shirts in the future, but they will not be required.
The cord is actually something that is handmade specifically for each student. There are traditional methods of braiding the material, tying the knots, and dying the cord. When students promote to a new belt, Jenny and James make each belt especially for each student, and ship them.
The Fitas can be purchased in a 10 pack on Amazon, so parents can pre=purchase this and have each different fita ready for the appropriate month.
