We are so excited to host a virtual workshop to make upcycled berimbaus!
Learning to play the instruments, specifically berimbau as it is very capoeira-specific, is a huge part of capoeira, and also something that someone with a higher rank (for example, blue color on the belt) needs to be proficient in.
The problem is that berimbaus can be very difficult to source online and also difficult to string up to use as a beginner to berimbau. A few of our students do have berimbaus, and if anyone would like information on purchasing one online, we are happy to help you with finding and ordering one online.
For those who would like a cheaper, lighter weight, permanently strung berimbau made from upcycled materials, this berimbau workshop is for you. We think this method of making a berimbau will make it much easier for our students to have them and also to use them.
Beginning in November, we will be incorporating berimbau practice into our classes (just like we practice drumming and singing).
Students still without blue color on their belts can continue to drum only in class, but it is still recommended to get a pandeiro or small djembe drum to learn to drum fully. It is also recommended to buy or make a berimbau at any stage, as earlier practice with it will make it easier to gain proficiency by blue belt.
Students with blue tips should be prepared in November to have a berimbau (purchased or upcycled) to play on in classes. If you choose to start with making an upcycled berimbau, here is some more info about our workshop:
What we'll do at the workshop:
1. A step-by-step walk through on how to make your own upcycled berimbau- you'll have your own instrument by the end of the workshop.
2. Instruction to get you started on playing your berimbau- how to hold it, balance it, strike it, practice drills, etc.
