This event is for students who have already participated in one batizado and have already earned their first, plain white cord. Learning how to tie and dye a cord is one of the fun and traditional elements of capoeira- it is personal and meaningful to learn to do this and is part of the reason why capoeira cords are (barely) commercially available
.
If you have not yet earned your white cord, Vespa and Coruja will make that and send it out by the next Batizado (Sunday, April 7th). New students do not need to attend this but are welcome to hang out!
You will need to have the following prior to this event:
1. An appropriate length of white cotton braided cord per student in your household. Students will come with the correct length already cut. We recommend measuring your current cord, and deciding if you want to add or take away any length, and adding/taking away that length. Then, to that length, add at least 6" so you have a little wiggle room- when you tie the knots, 2-3 inches total ends up being subtracted from your cord length.
We recommend this site and this specific rope if you are in the United States.
Here is a great option for those in Canada.
2. If you're a kiddo, a parent MUST be present to help with the knots. We will be able to teach the knot tie repeatedly during the class but adult finger dexterity will be needed.
3. Yellow RIT dye or the equivalent as we will be dipping the tips of the cords in the dye (second-event students will be earning yellow-tipped belts) and a place to do the dying (tub, old pot on a stove, etc). This may vary per student based on the product you use, but we can make some recommendations- essentially after the knots are tied, the tips will be dipped in the dye and then you leave it to hang dry. Any yellow rit dye is ok- lemon, golden, daffodil.
If you are unable to attend, we will provide a walk-through video of how to tie the knots. That said, we hope you can make it so you can be part of the fun, traditional, community aspect of creating the belts!
