What is Capoeira?
Capoeira (capu-EH-ra) is a Brazilian martial art that integrates music, dance, acrobatics, language, and culture.
Originating in Brazil during the 16th century, it was developed by enslaved people from Africa who were brought to the country. It emerged as a form of self-defense disguised as a dance to evade authorities. Capoeira continued to evolve and gain recognition throughout the 20th century, eventually becoming a symbol of Brazilian cultural identity and a powerful tool for resistance against oppression. Today, capoeira is practiced worldwide by people of all walks of life and is celebrated for it's community spirit.
Accessible and Effective Virtual Format
Our virtual capoeira class format is unique in that the entirety of our training is conducted online, and is live and interactive. Designed specifically for the virtual learner, our capoeira classes are accessible, effective, and fun. The convenience of joining from your own home allows for more consistent training and accommodates all types of schedules and walks of life.
Notably, our virtual format enables students to connect with each other all across the world, which is a unique learning and social experience.
Our Philosophy
Ignite Capoeira teaches a holistic practice that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit, promoting physical fitness, mental agility, and a sense of identity and connection. We integrate movement, music, culture, and community, which fosters self-expression and confidence. This secure sense of self is the bedrock for learning life skills, developing resiliency, and for nurturing positive mental health- all essential in the face of our changing world. Importantly, we believe we can accomplish building this foundation through play, connection, and fun!

High Quality Instruction
Classes are led by Jenny Johnson-Blanchard, or "Instrutora Vespa", and James Lynch, or "Instrutor Coruja". Jenny and James have over 40 years combined experience in martial arts, and have taught children and adults of all ages in both in-person and virtual formats. Jenny has been practicing capoeira for over 12 years, and holds the rank of "Instrutora" ("Instructor"). She also holds the rank of 4th degree black belt in karate. James has been practicing capoeira for nearly 20 years, and holds the rank of "Instrutor" ("Instructor"). Additionally, he holds the rank of 4th degree black belt in taekwondo.
Jenny and James are passionate about teaching capoeira, and have seen it positively impact countless people. They strive to create an inclusive and accessible virtual environment so that all people can participate in an engaging and enjoyable experience.
Jenny and James homeschool their three children, who also practice capoeira. Jenny is also a licensed teacher.
